I Can Sense the Undercurrent

I Can Sense the Undercurrent
by dan ankers

Most of life is lived on top of the metaphorical water
And civilization makes floating there, pretty easy
So, why not just live up where it's safe and dry and warm
Where everything seems relatively breezy?

Plus, we've all met dangers in our lives, or heard a tragic story
Or we base all or most of our choices, upon religious allegory
We learn very young, bout where we should go
And where we shouldn't ever want to be
And there are tales of horror, about lurkers in the depths of life
Who wait for us there, in the vast and murky caverns
Under the sea

I have always had a sense, a thirst for depth
I'm not saying I'm the deepest, but I enjoy running out of breath
And I love it when people see fit to disclose things
Out of their most arcane recesses
Where their water's never truly still
And where lives the quiet messes
The things we think and feel, when no one watches

I know for me, that I'm my favorite kind of person
When I leave the shallow end, in search of the uncertain
Where exploration is only a matter of turning ones head to the side
To ask the person next to you, what treasure troves they hide
Or taking personal risks with some sense of clarity
Not like the fool, walking off a cliff
But doing it carefully

Sure, there'll always be danger when you swim out of your depth
But for living a full life, as near as I can tell
There's not too many better ways, to know you've lived it well
